Fit, wear and care
  1. Take your usual size for a next-to-skin fit. Size up one if you want to wear it as a relaxed long-sleeve tee.
  2. Wear it alone or under knitwear. The flatlock seams leave no ridge under a pack strap.
  3. Air it overnight between wears; merino does not hold odor the way cotton does.
  4. Machine wash cold on the wool cycle. Line dry.
  5. Keep it away from hook-and-loop closures, which pull merino jersey.
  • Wash knitwear cold, by hand or on the wool cycle, and always dry it flat
  • Wash denim rarely, inside out and cold, and hang it to dry
  • Never tumble-dry wool, cashmere blends or waxed cotton
  • Re-wax waxed jackets once a season and never machine-wash or dry-clean them

Questions

Asked about Merino Long-Sleeve Base Layer

How does it fit?

Close. It is a base layer and is cut to sit next to the skin. For a relaxed fit, size up one.

Is it warm or cool?

It regulates: warm under a sweater in the cold, comfortable alone on a mild day. It is a 170gsm jersey, so it is a light layer, not insulation.

How many wears between washes?

Merino resists odor, and people travel for days in one. How many is up to you and your nose.

Will it itch under a pack?

The seams are flatlock, so there is no ridge under a strap. We cannot promise how merino feels on your skin.

Can I subscribe?

Yes, at 15% off each box on Essentials Refresh.

Is it in a set?

Yes. The Layering Set holds this base layer, a Merino Rib Beanie and a pair of Merino Hiking Socks for $138, which is $16 less than the three bought apart.

Four days of hiking, one shirt

It did not smell on day four. I did. The shirt was fine.

  2. Mateo G.

    Verified buyer

    Black · 5'10", usually M, bought M: close

No seam under the pack straps

I usually get a red line on my shoulders. Not with this.

  3. Petra L.

    Verified buyer

Charcoal · 5'6", usually S, bought M: sized up as advised

Sized up to wear it alone

In my usual S it is skin-tight. The M works as a long-sleeve tee.

  4. Fergus W.

    Verified buyer

    Black · 6'0", usually L, bought L: close

    Under the Fisherman Rib

This is the answer to the prickle of the big sweater.

  5. Anouk V.

    Verified buyer

    Navy · 5'8", usually M, bought M: close

    Small hole at six months

A pinhole near the hem, probably from my belt buckle. Merino jersey is delicate. They repaired it, since it was at a seam, but be gentle with it.

  6. Caleb N.

    Verified buyer

    Charcoal · 5'9", usually M, bought M: close

    Cold commutes

Bike to work at freezing. This, a shell, done.

  7. Yara S.

    Verified buyer

Black · 5'11", usually L, bought L: good sleeve length

    Long enough in the arms

Raglan sleeves that reach my wrists. Rare for me.

  8. Linus A.

    Verified buyer

Navy · 6'1", usually XL, bought XL: close

    Dries slowly on a line

Overnight indoors was not quite enough in a damp cabin. Fine at home.
