Fit, wear and care
- One Wash Indigo: order your usual waist. It is already shrunk.
- Raw Indigo: order one waist up. It is unsanforized and loses about a size in the waist and about an inch of length on its first hot soak.
- Soak a raw pair before you hem it: thirty minutes in hot water, then hang it to dry. Wear it in for a few weeks after that.
- Hemming is free on request through the repairs page. A hemmed pair is final sale, so wear it in before you decide.
- Wash rarely, inside out and cold, and hang it to dry. Raw indigo rubs off on pale things until its first washes.
- Wash knitwear cold, by hand or on the wool cycle, and always dry it flat
- Wash denim rarely, inside out and cold, and hang it to dry
- Never tumble-dry wool, cashmere blends or waxed cotton
- Re-wax waxed jackets once a season and never machine-wash or dry-clean them

Asked about Straight Selvedge Jean
Raw Indigo or One Wash?
They are the same jean in two states. Raw Indigo is unwashed and unsanforized: it shrinks about one size in the waist and about an inch in length on the first hot soak, and it fades to the way you wear it. One Wash is already shrunk, so it is your usual size from day one.
What size do I order in Raw Indigo?
One waist up from your usual. After the first hot soak it comes down to your size. If you never plan to soak or wash it hot, your usual waist will stay your usual waist, but it will shrink the first time it does meet hot water.
Which inseam, if I am going to soak it?
Allow for about an inch of length to go. If you wear a 32, the 34 soaked and hemmed, or the 32 worn a little short, are the two honest choices.
How does hemming work?
It is free on request, through the repairs page, once you have the pair. A hemmed pair is final sale, so soak it and wear it in first.
Can I exchange for another waist?
Yes, free, within 45 days, while the pair is unworn, unwashed and has its tags. A pair that has been soaked or hemmed cannot be exchanged.
Will the indigo rub off?
Raw indigo transfers to pale upholstery, shoes and bags until it has been washed a few times. That is the dye, and it is expected.
Is it covered by the repair program?
Yes. A seam, a rivet or a fly button that fails under normal use is repaired free for two years.

Sized up one in raw, exactly as told
I wear a 32. Bought the 33 raw, soaked it hot for half an hour, hung it. It came down to a true 32 and lost just over an inch in length.
