Fit, wear and care
  1. Take your usual size. It is cut with room for a sweater.
  2. Never machine-wash it and never dry clean it. Sponge it with cold water when it is dirty.
  3. Re-wax it once a season with the Jacket Bar Wax: warm the tin, work the wax in with a cloth, and set it with a hairdryer.
  4. Re-waxing once a season is also what keeps a waxed jacket inside its warranty.
  5. New wax can mark pale upholstery for the first few wears. Hang it to air, away from heat.
  • Wash knitwear cold, by hand or on the wool cycle, and always dry it flat
  • Wash denim rarely, inside out and cold, and hang it to dry
  • Never tumble-dry wool, cashmere blends or waxed cotton
  • Re-wax waxed jackets once a season and never machine-wash or dry-clean them

Questions

Asked about Waxed Field Jacket

How does it fit?

Regular and true to size, with room for a sweater underneath. You do not need to size up to layer.

How do I clean it?

Sponge it with cold water. Never machine-wash it and never dry clean it: both strip the wax.

How often do I re-wax it?

Once a season. It keeps the jacket waterproof, and it is what keeps the jacket inside its warranty.

What does the repair program cover?

Seams, the two-way zip, snaps and buttons that fail under normal use, free for two years from delivery and at cost after that. It does not cover normal wear such as fading and abrasion, or a jacket that was not re-waxed.

Is it waterproof?

Waxed cotton sheds rain and wind well when the wax is kept up. It is not a taped-seam rain shell; in a long downpour water will eventually find the seams.

Does it smell?

New wax has a faint, clean smell that fades with airing.

Why is stock low?

It is made in small runs in England. The core colors are restocked every season; if your size is out, use Notify me.

    Zip repaired four winters in

The two-way zip stopped tracking in its fourth year. Out of the free window, so I paid cost, and it came back with a new brass zip and a fresh wax. This is the jacket I will hand down.

    Medium over a heavy sweater

No need to size up. The Fisherman Rib fits under my usual size.

    Wax on my car seat

For the first few wears it left a faint mark on pale fabric. The page warns about it. It stopped.

Re-waxed it on the kitchen table

Took an hour with the bar wax and a hairdryer. It beads water like new.

  5. Ignatius K.

    Heavy in a reassuring way

This is a real jacket. The snaps close with a clunk.

  6. Marta V.

Olive · 5'1", usually XS, bought XS: long in the sleeve

Sleeves long on a small frame

XS fits my shoulders, but the sleeves reach my knuckles. I turn the cuffs. A petite length would help.

A snap came off, fixed for free

The storm flap lost a snap in the first winter. Free label, fixed, back with a note.

  8. Sorrel A.

    Verified buyer

Navy · 5'7", usually M, bought M: true to size

    Not for a downpour

Sheds a shower beautifully. In an hour of heavy rain my shoulders got damp. They say so.

Tartan lining is a nice surprise

You only see it when it is open. Warm against a shirt.
